Magnet Resonance Imaging

General Information

The magnet resonance imaging (MRI) has attained utmost importance in the field of diagnostic radiology.
The principle behind magnet resonance was first discovered by Bloch and Purcell indepently. It was about after 25 years that the principle of magnetic resonance was used in the field of medicine. In 1971 Damadian published his work showing that MRI helps in in-vitro differentiation of malignant tumors from normal tissues.
But the breakthrough came in 1973 when Lauterbur was for the first time able to demonstrate a high spacial resolution of a fluid-filled phantom.
In 1976 DAMANDIAN demonstrated for the first time in-vivo visualisation of malignant cells in a mouse and in 1977 for the first time in-vivo visualisation of human thorax with superconducting magnet.
Besides Ultrasonography MRI is the only imaging method which is not associated with radiation. With MRI it is possible to obtain two and also three dimensions images of the human body.
