Spectrum of Complex Causes

A delayed diagnosis of chronic hepatitis C is very unfortunate because there are highly potential medications these days - the so called protease and polymerase inhibitors - for this disease. More than 60 percent of infected patients can cured when diagnosed at the right time. "The spectrum of causes for other liver diseases is very complex and we must also consider other factors besides medical factors like social phenomenon and social trends", says Professor Zeuzem. These factors are trends in dietary habits, exposure to medications which could lead to fatty liver hepatitis, the so called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) or could cause toxic damage to the liver.

Liver tumors belong to tumors with steepest rising trend in Germany and is considered to be the main cause of death in Asia and Africa. Hence, early detection and stage-related therapy plays an important role. The common vision of Professors Zeuzem, Bechstein and Vogl: "When we three retire in about 20 years from now, we would want to be able to cure 95 precent of patients with liver disease". A noble vision which could be realised with the help of "Liver Centre" - officially established on the 1st of March 2008. The three specialist summerise it ideally as follows: "with the help of our highly modern diagnostic methods we can correctly diagnose the cause and stage of disease, for therapy we offer most modern and innovative medical treatment, minimal invasive procedures and operative treatment as well as transplantation".
